Napa Valley Picnic Chic

Picnic Experiences Napa Valley Style

Part of the wine tasting experience is the indulgence of the senses. What better way to sooth all your senses and rejuvenate your soul than with a relaxing picnic on a mountain…  In the shade of a 150-year-old oak tree… With a light breeze embracing you in wisps of jasmine or honeysuckle or roses that have just come in bloom. Have I set the picture?

Picnic Etiquette

Know before you go…

Before heading out, take a quick refresher on our “6 Simple Rules to Picnicking at Wineries” to ensure you have the best time out.

Scout Your Location … Oh! We’ve done that for you!

We’ve tackled the hard work of finding locations that give you that relaxing setting coupled with great wines. Here are a few of our favorites.

Pope Valley Winery

Pope Valley
(approx. 50mins. from the inn)

A little-known gem, this winery is a bit off the beaten path but well worth the effort. The property dates to 1897, and has been lovingly cared for by the Eakle family since 1997. You’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time exploring the original gravity-fed winery or peering into founder Ed Haus’ Blacksmith shop. Tours and tastings are by appointment.

Rutherford Hill Winery

Rutherford District
(approx. 25mins.)

Known for their Merlot, Rutherford Hill also makes a wonderful Sangiovese. However, it is a very small production. So if you see it on their tasting list, grab it! Then head across the path to their picnic grove dotted with olive trees and the best view of the Rutherford Bench from about 1000 feet. Reservations required. $75 per table up to 8 guests. (Fee waived if equivalent value of wine purchased.)

Bell Wine Cellars

(approx. 12mins.)

Bell Wine Cellars has been quietly doing their thing – handcrafted, limited production of high caliber wines – for almost 30 years. Just outside of Napa, a mere 10 minutes from us, they always take extra special care of our guests. Try their “Grapes to Glass” tour and linger with a picnic in their gardens.

Let Us Prepare Your Picnic

Call our innkeeper a couple days ahead of when you’d like to go, and we’ll put together a gourmet picnic with all the trimmings for you in a thermal-lined Beazley House bag.

If you happen to already be out and about, here are a couple good suggestions to pick up things on your way:

JCB Atelier

Yountville (approx. 14mins.)

Playfully dubbed, the “grown-ups’ candy store”, JCB Atelier is the perfect version of a French Atelier right up the road in Yountville. Chocked full of charcuterie and cheeses from small farms and producers throughout France, Spain, and Portugal, as well as local Bay Area producers of artisan meats and cheeses. They can set you up with a lovely assortment or compose delectable sandwiches and provisions to take along.

V. Sattui Winery

St. Helena (approx. 24mins.)

This Napa Valley stalwart continues to be a most popular stop. Sip any of their 75 wines, and grab a bottle to enjoy with your gems found in their deli. Then escape with your loot to the shade of their over 150-year-old oak tree. A word of caution: This winery is extremely busy on weekends. So plan ahead or go with patience. Or visit during the week.
